Me and the wife have a house.
Ok, so we're not married yet. And I'd be murdered if I referred to spindr as "the wife", but apart from that the rest is fine. We own a house, at least.

We've had the keys for about a week now and we've been really busy ever since. As a quicck run down of our glorious weekend of cleaning...

Friday night - Hooving and dusting the new house.
Saturday morning - up at 7am, to collect the carpet cleaner. I did one room and psindr did the rest of the house. I mess around with some very toxic chemicals and the oven, which hasn't been cleaned recently. At about 2130 we head off back to the flat, where we clean some more.

Sunday - I got a strimmer and did the small front lawn. It looks miles better now. spindr does a ton more work at the flat. In the afternoon we break to offer the tour to my mum, sister and nannan, before heading to the pub. We say good bye to them and then head back to the pub to discuss bathrooms. After drawing several maps of the room in an appauling scale (considering qwe had squared paper!) we then head off to the house at about 2000, to look at the bathroom and decide what to do with it.

Testerday we had a plumber and a roofer around to look at the place and tonight we're going to look at bathroom suites. I think it is fair to say we're busy. After all, we're moving in at the end of the month.

It is a good thing we're going to Castle Howard next weekend for the proms.

Some reviews...
I noticed that Fran reviewed Quantum of Solace and I noticed that I have bad mouthed anything in a while...

His Girl Friday (1940)
This film was awesome, if a little like sprinting one hundred metres. Not a second wasted on screen without someone talking, the action is fast and the conversation was great. I couldn't help feeling sorry for Bruce - he seemed decent enough, he just lost out to journalism and Cary Grant.

Quantum of Solace
(May contain spoilers!)
A bit of a non-entity really, which made me want the old bond more than ever. It entirely lacked humour or charm. Bond is meant to be witty and charming, right? or am I just wanting Roger Moore's Bond. Arterton's Bond girl was disappointing - the way he pulled her was just bizarre. Her exit was just stolen, straight from Goldfinger.

Next to Mr Greene; the unremarkable Mr Greene. Did he do anything that made him stand out as a bad guy? I didn't see it. Their entire plot just seemed a little low key - they want to increase the energy costs for people in South America? fiendish. Maybe British Gas is part of an evil empire. It isn't a satellite that blasts people from space or radiating the world's gold supply is it, really.

The Fears of Henry IV: The Life of England's Self-Made King
I do like Ian Mortimer as a historical biographer, not that I have read many biographies. In the end I had some sympathy with Henry IV, even though he might not always have deserved it. He was so close to power and seemingly what the country would have wanted; another Edward III. He took on Richard, was exiled, came back and took the throne before fighting just about everyone. The Welsh, Scottish, the French all had a go and he defeated the Percys in a rebellion. Just when he seemed to be about to push his enemies back he fell ill and just like the Black Prince and Edward III he died slowly.

I have moved away from Mortimer, to give him a chance to write some more! I am now read Alison Wier's book about Eleanor of Aquitaine. It reads a lot more like fiction than I am really happy with, often with the views of chroniclers given as fact. The descriptions given of Eleanor as she was preparing for a crusade are a little bizarre - jewelled shields and gleaming swords.

I bring you chaos...
I am very excited this morning.
After the messing about to pick up the DVD, I finally have Garth Marenghi's Darkplace!
It has even prompted me to get a new LJ icon, it is just that good.

One handed update.
Last Thursday I fell, whilst roller skating, and I fractured my left elbow. Ow!
Sarah has been brilliant and she has been looking after me... she has even been brilliant when I put on my sad and injured voice - which is supposed to be 50% cute and 50% charming, but somehow misses... and comes out all whiny.

What a good weekend.
What good weather we're having.

Some people might say that you need suncream on in this weather, especially on your feet... but I said pah! and I only put it on the rest of me...
Sadly this means I am hobbling about today with burnt feet. hrm.

This weekend started off pretty well, when Sarah stole* some wine from Tesco...

Then me and Sarah ran off to Whitby on Saturday. It was very hot, but there was quite a cool breeze that made the weather very deceptive... we had a picnic, watched oddly as a couple erected a tent on the beach and then just sat in it... and did a bit of paddling...

*or didn't get charged for.

Current Mood: and burnt.

Why I love cricket commentary...
From the BBC website...

1125: After that uncertain start, Strauss has hit his stride - he clips Gul through midwicket for two consecutive fours. England have raced to 44-0 in less than half an hour's play. Another point for Woolmer - not all curries are created equal. For sure, a creamy korma with pilau rice plus poppadoms is a calorie disaster - but who could possibly complain about a simple lentil dhaal with plain rice?

Yuck!
Oh my god!
I am odd with blood and things... I don't know how it happened, but I can't stand the stuff... I just go pale, start feeling sick and I am generally ill around blood...

I went to visit Sarah last night and during our escape to the local park bench we had to go in the lift. The lifts are usually very busy and the one that we got in was very busy. I was squashed next to some people and, like you do, you look at them and be a bit nosy.

The woman stood at the side of me had a metal tube sticking out of the top of her head!! There was blood around the hole!!!
I did all I could to not look...
All I could think of was "don't be clumsy, don't puke".

On the way home...
I was coming back from Sheffield yesterday and something bizarre happened... good, I think... but bizarre...
I was following a police car as we went around a roundabout... and as I was leaving a car pushed in between me and the police car... well, the police car stopped in the middle of the road and had a word with the driver... instructing him to come and apologise to me...
So, smiling, the man came up to me car and apologised - I think that he found the whole thing very odd as well...
Then we set off again.

This morning I am listening to an album that I had been really eager to get... they sold it well on their website... and it sounded good on their myspace site (www.myspace.com/brotherfiretribe)...
I am often really impressed with cheesy metal - not to say that they are brilliant... but they'll amuse me for a while...

I'm ready to fight,
Ready to rumble through tonight..."

Tested.
This weekend wasn't good - I think that sums it up.
The part I am going to talk about though is X-Men 3.

I'll start by talking about the Starwars prequels (1-3)... because there are a lot of parallels with the X-Men series... or perhaps there is one quite telling parallel...
I didn't care what happened to the characters.
In Starwars when the Jedi are killed it is supposed to be really sad, but it isn't - because the audience never had an emotional connection with the Jedi. There were too many of them, none of them had enough screen time and they didn't have good enough lines to have them be anything other than "Jedi #1" - who eventually ended up dead.

I knew that it was a bad thing that they were dying, but only in passing... the Jedi are good people, trying to do what is right... so it is sad that they died, right?
I feel this way about the X-Men. They don't have personalities, or decent lines - they have computer generated powers. What do we know about Storm? well... hrm... she does lightning?
So do I care if she is in trouble? and do I want her to win?
No and no.

X-Men3 really does suffer from being badly written and by being rushed out...
I am not really sure it had a plot.

Eurovision fever!
Well... Daz Sampson, how disappointing... we'd win with Cradle of Filth... especially if they did Devil Woman... or they're doing a cover of Temptation or Stay, and they'd win easily...
We need the Finnish attitude... and we need some of this:
